PRESENT
Rhonda Denet has been described as a virtuoso who lends vocal flair to every song she sings, skillfully taking you from R&B and Jazz standards to “souled-out” pop favorites, to even her own inspirational ballads. This formally trained and soulfully gifted songbird completely covers the gamut. Denét can bottom out like Chaka or share air with Aretha.
In 2002 Ms. Denet began producing cabaret-styled showcases (with pianist Martin Bejerano) at venues such as West Bank Café and Upstairs at Rose's Turn. In 2005 she co-founded and fronted the R&B band, DeLaFeel, which eventually led to collaboration with bassist Juan Gallego. The duo served as resident artists at Crudo Bar on the Lower East Side throughout 2006 -- performing R&B covers by Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Sade and others; souled-out renderings by John Mayer, George Michael, Pat Benatar and more.
Denet continues to perform regularly with recent appearances at The Blue Note, Bowery Poetry Club, The Baggot Inn, The Living Room, and Puppets Jazz (Brooklyn). She is band leader for two cover bands: The Rhonda Denet Project, with a residency at Le Grand Dakar restaurant in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn and The Shepard Denet Trio that provides entertainment for lounges and restaurants as well as corporate and private events. She is also the program manager and featured performer for the “Songs For Seniors” series presented at senior citizens facilities throughout the metropolitan area. In addition she is developing original material for release in 2008.
PAST
Rhonda Denét found her voice at the age of 9 and has been devoted with the arts ever since. As a native of Washington, DC, she was continuously exposed to varied genres of theatre and music. By the age of 12, she knew that being involved in every aspect of the arts was to be the focus of her life.
Rhonda earned a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance with a concentration in Musical Theatre from the New York University School of Education and a Master of Arts in Arts Administration from the Florida State University School of Music, where she focused on early black musical theater. Her adoration of Jazz of the 30's and 40's, coupled with a profound love of R&B, Soul, Pop and Rock led to performing showcases of the music that has shaped who she is.
She has performed in plays and musical theatre productions, as well as with several choirs and music groups, throughout New York City and the metropolitan area. In 2002 Rhonda began producing cabaret-styled showcases (performed as a solo artist and with her band the Rhonda Dene’t Project) at venues such as Izzy Bar, West Bank Café, Dominion Theater, and Upstairs at Rose's Turn. In 2005 she founded DeLaFeel, an R&B Cover and Originals project, with drummer John Ferris and performed with them in Staten Island and Brooklyn.
